An interesting race
I was driving down US1 in Fl when a young guy in a new RX8 pulls up next to me at the light and wants to race. I figured, why the hell not, its time I get used to losing in my Protege. (2000 ES). Light turns green, he gets a decent launch, we both get minimal wheel spin, and every shift so far we've just been tweaking each other. Finally, we run into third and this is where I think,"Hes gonna walk me real easy now." Well..he didn't and we held even on til about 80 mph where we shut 'em down. Noone pulled, we remained even the entire time. At the next light he asked me if I was stock, I told him, "Yeah, bone stock so as not to void my warrenty." He replied "wow." I asked him if he was, and turns out the car is only a week or so old. But now my purpose for writing this thread:
What I'm unsure of is that my 1.8l economy car was able to keep up with Mazda's premier sports car, or better yet, why was he not able to walk me with ease? He wasn't a bad driver, he got a decent launch, and well...to be honest with you all, I felt that I should have lost. Any logic/reasoning?

hahaha, In all honesty my bone stock rx8 will pull away from msp's ESPECIALLY from a dig. From a roll it's closer but still no contest.
when comparing a low 14s (14.1-14.3stock) to a mid 16s car you have to remember that the rx8 has the launch advantage IF he uses it but even then he has 108bhp more and about 40lbs less to carry....so..... he should EASILY pull off.

New rx8's are limited in power untill they break 10,000 miles or so. Then they get an extra 50 hp or something like that.
Regardless the rx8's are still jokes. We completly destroyed one in my buddies v6 mustang.

my head hurts from the last few posts.....
the 3rd gen rx7s had a 5K mile break-in tune on the ecu. No rx8 gets a 50hp bump at 10K miles....thats lunacy.
p.s. I'll gladly race your friends v6 mustang in either my p5 or the rx8. Tell him to bring his checkbook.

I'm going to have to side with you all on the fact hat he probably was working on the break in period. Afterall, he said he owned it a week tops. I'd hate to ruin a beautiful new motor over some race. But yeah, it was definitely a fluke.

The funny part here is the fact the guy in the 8 isnt gonna get his full potenial out of his car. With no break in period before racing, what a dumb ***. But yeah i think we all agree he should have smoked you (not calling you a liar). Congrats!
