I think that when you shift an auto like a stick you can wind it out a bit more. In passenger car "auto sticking"
It kinda depends on the sircumstance of whos an Idiot for shifting an auto like a stick shift. My Dads drag truck is pushing about 1085 WHP. Its a 2 speed auto and he manually shifts it at 8500rpm.

Like on the 2002.5+ Protege 5 automatics, you slip it into "manual" mode and you can push it up to upshift, and down to downshift.
"Sequential sport shift" is the name they give it.

I still think it will be kind of close, you will loose but not terribly...

My old 01 Eclipse GT had the auto stick which did make a difference from auto mode to auto man mode. You can wind it out a bit more then in auto mode.

i was just refering to the fact that he said he doesnt know how to launch, its pretty simple in an auto, you line up, get all pumped up that your racing your automatic, wait for the hands to drop, and whoa floor it. yeah in a full out drag truck, which is set up for the shifting, have at it. in a protege. just leave it be.

I also think that the point here might not be 'I think I'll win because he's an automatic', but rather 'other than his car is an automatic, is there any other reason his car would be faster?'.
The numbers I got at edmunds.com show the protege ES with 130hp@6000 and 135ft-lbs@4000, 0-60MPH in 9.1s, 2634 lbs. The RSX has 160hp@6500 and 141ft-lbs@4000, 0-60MPH in 8.7s, 2789 lbs. By those numbers I'd say you have a chance if you can get him to bring a friend or two for the run... if he brings a 200lb friend then you have a 50lb weight advantage now... he have subs? you? lets level this all out!
and I agree with the others, get it over with we want to know!

According to your numbers, and if they are of similar weight to begin with, the ES already has a 150lb or so advantage...?...If the RSX driver brought a 200lb friend then the advantage would be over 350 lbs...a lot more significant than 50...
