2000 protege 1.8 timing belt troubles

Hey just got a 2000 protege 1.8 with a timing belt that the timing spring busted and belt was flopping and car was chugging and blowing smoke like crazy. So I proceeded to replace belt and line up crank and cams as I have read and seen in manuals. Started it and it runs ruff and blows white gasie smelling smoke. I moved belt one tooth each way and it still does not run right. Could it be possible that crank is out of time by one turn? I have replaced timing belt on a other protege and noticed that for it to run right the cam marks were one kog off to make it run right. Any help would be greatly appreciated ? I also tried to talk with a Mazda mechanic but the dealer would not let me by there service writers. They told me to look in a manual?
