Closing the deal on the MP5. Need help wrestling
After lengthy reseach I finally choose the MP5 over the Impreza. I am going to get the MP5 this week. The offer the dealer is giving is $22795 CAD (PID&freight included )+tax. But I know I should do a lot better than that. What price should I shoot for in my second round of talks? Do you know how much markup there is on the 2002 models?
Model:2002 Protege5, Vancouver BC
Options offered: Moonroof+AC+Standard
Additional features wanted:Roof Rack, 6discCD Changer,Mats
Outback
Vancouver, BC.

Go to a different dealer and tell them the price you were quoted...
The second dealer will want to make a sale so will probably quote you something less...and also push to get something less...then go back to the first one and tell them you were quoted a lower price somewhere else and that you will go back there if they don't give you a price to match...
its a good theory anyways...i havent tested it yet though.

Car Buying Tips
What I did was go to Cars Direct and got a quote from them. Then I took that down to the dealer and made him match that price or see how close he could get. I got mine for REAL close to dealer invoice, I probably could have gotten him to match the cars direct price now that I think about it. This way there really is no negotiations, you know how low he could actually go so if you can get him close enough that your happy you should get a good deal. Also go in on a sunday or 1/2 hour before they close. They are too tired to deal much so the bend a little easier. I didn't get out of there until a little after 10pm they closed at 9. I just bought one on thursday so I have all this fresh in my head. I also found a car buying guide on the internet that was pretty helpful. You can email me if you want me to try to find it again.
Hope this helps, Nick

trust me, there is no such ways or how to buy a car. if you want your sales guy or dealer to make nothing from you. you should run a dealer then sell it to yourself. if you expect your sale guy look after you in the future. let them to make some profits. we always say the happiest customer is the one to pay for full price because they got a excellent service and respect from dealership.

Salesman looking out for you?
I don't think if you pay what they want they are going to look out for you any more in the future, than if your in there for three days trying to talk them down. Your not dealing with the sales or finance department if you have a problem with your car, your dealing with service, which has no idea how much you paid for it. Worst case take it to another dealer, they don't know how much you paid. I say get it as cheap as you can they are not your friends they just wanna make a buck as bad as you want to save one. My .02

Exactly Camss96. Last time I bought a car, the salesman pretended not to recognize me when I had problems with the car later on. Nor did he recognize any of the items they had promised to fix on the car. So I agree with the comment that the extra your fork out with the sales guy is not going to affect your reception with the service guys.

From the Web pages I went, The US profit marking on the MSRP seems to be around %9.7 (markup on base model). Assuming the Canadian markup is the same the profit margin should be around 1929 CAD.
What do you guys think? Does anyone here know the cost of the base model?

www.carcostcanada.com
www.autobytel.ca
www.carbuyingtips.com
check out all three sites before finalizing anything
the carbuyingtips site is US based, but the info is relevant anywhere you can buy cars.
sign up on carcostcanada and find out exactly what the dealer pays for the car and options, then you'll have a good idea on how much you think you can move, giving the dealer a fair profit too (5 - 6%). That way you both come away from the deal happy.
It'll cost ya like 30 CDN for the quotes from carcost (thats what is cost me a year ago when i was researching anyway), but it's worth it if you can save 1000 on a car. I think you get 3 quotes for that price, so you can get the p5, and 2 other cars you may be interested in down the road...
