17" Rims, Lowered, and Rubbing

Well I lowered my car with the Eibach pro springs, have some 17" rims, and I was experiencing some severe rubbing with people in the back. Camber adjustment is out of the question, I don't want to be replacing my tires every couple of months. There isn't enough lip to roll to really make much of a difference. So off the car goes to the bodyshop next week to get the fender lip ground right out and repainted. Kinda expensive way to get what I want, but I want to be able to fly around corners and not have to worry about rubbing. Anyone else have any experience with this type of problem?? What type of solutions did you use? I know grinding the fenders is probably extreme, but may as well do it right

How much is your car lowered?? I'm just really curious cause from the looks of it it's not that low so I'm surprised it's rubbing. My boyfriend (1fatEs) has 17's on his Es and his car is lowered 3 inches in the front and rear and we have never had a problem with the tires rubbing. That's even when we have his box with his 4 10's in the back and two of his friends that aren't little guys. He was tucking tire and never rubbed. Have you thought about getting a lower profile tire?? I'm not sure what size tires he has on his 17's but I'm sure if you ask him he'd tell you.

You should have used Rishie's Offset Recipie

Grinding the fenders is not "doing it right"...

Buying the right wheels with the right offset is

You both are probably right, but I wanted to have rims nobody else does, I wanted wide tires (7.5) and I wanted my car to have that tucked look (ala GT racing cars). This is the only way it is going to happen properly by the looks of it.

As fas as grinding the fenders not being the correct way, i suppose, but the other options aren't correct either (rolling the fender lip, camber). Here I have a body shop doing the mods and repainting the panels. Maybe a little extreme, but I get the wide tire, low stance. And when I put the bags in, this mod will probably help alot.

I 'll take another picture, the drop is quite extreme. Maybe the last pic was a bad angle, or the car was on a slope. Looking at the car today, the front and rear wheels are pretty much tucked a half inch into the wheel wells all the time.

BE CAREFUL!!!

Be careful when you have your wheel wells shaved out. I had the same problem (Got my Rims before Rishie came along) and was told I couldn't roll the fenders, not enough lip to roll. So I went and took a sander bit and drill and shaved out the wheel wells. It still rubs slightly, but more importantly, it looks like the fender is no longer strong enough and I am getting creases and bends in the metal where I didn't have to shave for the tire to fit. SOOOO, SHAVING WILL GREATLY REDUCE THE STRENGTH OF YOUR QUARTER PANEL! Just something to keep in mind. Good Luck.

Your drop is not that extreme...My car is slammed with the GC's can you say mad wheel tuck...your problem is that the offset you have on those wheels is too low...I am guessing 45 or under.

In order to run a 17x7.5 with a slammed P5, you need a higher offset...I am running a +48 mm offset on my 17x7.5's thanks to Rishie and I am not rubbing with 4 people in the car, hard cornering and 3 inches of lowering...and yes, I am running 215/40 series tires all around.

I seriously suggest you email Rishie or call him @ 1.408.947.0505....He is the P5 wheel man!

You may be able to get the wheels machined to a higher offset...this would be a much better solution than sending your car to the body shop.

Greddy is right. Get the wheels machined to increase the offset . . . I asked the other day what the offset was on your wheels . . usually Enkei's are a 38-40 in 17" and from this board and Rishie you need something around a 48 and up . . . right Rishie?

Don't start grinding and rolling . . . I have seen that turn into a disaster. Note the earlier post. Good luck.

After reading the above "horror stories", I'm certainly glad that I hooked up with RISHIE@ his Automotive Research shop, here in Silicon Valley.

Rishie made things appear "easy" while his knowlegeable wheelguruu, Sean cafefully mounted my "NEW" 17 X 7.5 Gun-Metal ROTA Sub Zero's w/ 215/40HR17 Kumho BK Ecsta to my Vivid Yellow Protege5.....

......again HATS OFF to Rishie & Sean for the "TOTAL JOB".

Later, Speedbump.

PS. The "look" is nothing short of AWESOME.

Problem solved, I went with a camber kit. I used a slight -camber adjustment to tuck the wheels into the car so they won't rub. And upon further analysis, my offset wasn't enough to make the wheels fit as good as they could.
