this topic has been beat to death on the board before.... do a search.
As long as the tire is close in size someone can likely mount it on the rim for you. It is up to you to do some research on the tire you are mounting on the rim.
In what I have looked at, most manufacturer's recommend a rim that is 6.5" or greater in width for a 205 tire. The ones that come stock on the Proteges are 6.0" wide rims.
Can you mount the tire... sure.... should you? your call.

Tires
I just put 205/45wr/16's from Tire Rack. They are Yokohama Prada Spec 2's. They are excellent. better traction, smoother and quiter. We'll see about treadwear but I will be at the auto-x here in S.D. They fit no problem. look mean too.

you'll be fine with Sumitomos HRTZII's 205 50 16 fit perfectly.
get them at tire rack for $84, what a steal!!!
I have them in place of stock SP5000's.
P5 will have a little more grip and high speed stability (more stabile at speeds over 70mph) also P5 will soak bumps and road imperfections, in cornering it feels more stabile and grippy.
You'll lose a bit of acceleration and a little bit of steering quickness, but you'll have better starts on wet surface (no spin zone)

I have my winter tires (205/50wr16 Pirelli Wintersport 210s) on my stock wheels and they fit great. They actually perform better than the stock dunlops in the cold as well, although aren't the best for deep snow and ice...
