Tire size for 16X7 wheels

So I almost have a set of 16 X 7 rims (offset 40mm), and try as I might I can't find the size tire I can fit on there. Tire Rack says 195/50-16 (same as stock), why would I buy rims wider than stock to have the same size tires? Anyhow a search of this forum turned up nada-zip-zilch-bupkis, so if any of you can help me out I would greatly appreciate it. I have Santa's ear, so I can make sure you get on his nice list!

I'd go with 205/45-16 tires. Handling will improve over stock since you'll have a wider tread and a lower profile. Speedo error will only be 1.763% too fast. An offset of +40 mm is a little low if your car is a P5 or an ES either of which has an OEM +50 mm offset but it should work without interference problems with a 205 tire on a 16"wheel. The sedan, BTW, has more wheel clearance than the P5.
